An Overview of Teledyne ADCPS Water Resources

Teledyne ADCPS Water Resources can cover a variety of monitoring needs from streams and rivers to reservoirs and irrigation channels. Their monitoring devices include both fixed-mount and boat-mount configurations, capable of monitoring water velocity, stage and discharge data at depths of .12 meters to 300 meters.

Teledyne RDI offers seven different products with varying specialties: the RiverPro ADCP, RiverRay ADCP, StreamPro ADCP, ChannelMaster ADCP, Workhorse Monitor ADCP, Horizontal ADCP and Vertical ADCP.

Boat or Float Mount Configurations

RiverPro ADCP

The RiverPro ADCP is designed for shallow rivers. The device operates with a rapid-sampling discharge system. Using auto-adaptive sampling, the RiverPro can provide accurate discharge measurements without any need for manual adjustments. However, a manual override is available for fully custom configuration. The instrument includes a 20-degree beam for data collection on river bottoms, and a 600 kHz 5th beam, with a calibrated RSSI (Return Signal Strength Indicator), for measuring true vertical velocity. A fully integrated GPS allows users to monitor positions through geo-tracking.

Teledyne designed the RiverPro to fit the RiverRay float (listed below) to eliminate the need for purchasing two floats.

  • Profiling Range: .12 m to 25 m
  • Data output rate (typical): 2 Hz
  • Profile resolution (mini cell size): 2 cm
  • Number of cells: 200
  • Internal recording capacity: 16 MB
  • Operating environment: stream, river, lake, reservoir, estuary, irrigation canal

RiverRay ADCP

The RiverRay measures stream and river discharge data at a greater range than the RiverPro. The RiverRay can monitor anywhere from .4 meters to 40 meters. It uses a light-weight phased-array transducer and a vertical beam for improved bathymetric reporting. Auto-adaptive sampling continually optimizes discharge sampling without requiring operator involvement. Orders include a custom-designed float.

Overall, the RiverRay is a versatile, economical solution for monitoring tranquil streams or rapidly-flowing rivers.

  • Frequency: 600 kHz
  • Data output rate (typical): 1-2 Hz
  • Profile resolution (mini cell size): 10 cm
  • Number of cells: 200
  • Internal recording capability: 16 MB
  • Operating environment: stream, river, lake, reservoir, estuary, irrigation canal

StreamPro ADCP

The StreamPro is ideal for shallow streams. The product measures discharge every two to three minutes, a fraction of the time required for most hand-held devices. Since the StreamPro reports in real time, you can avoid moving from station to station to obtain single-point velocity data. Instead, you can simply walk across a bridge or use a tagline. The StreamPro’s small transducer head, 3.8 cm in diameter, allows for minimal flow disturbance. Its sensors provide reliable bottom tracking in .1 m to 7 m depth. Since it runs on low power usage, the StreamPro can operate for a full day on 8 AA batteries.

  • Frequency: 2000 kHz
  • Data Output Rate (typical): 1 Hz
  • Profile Resolution (mini cell size): 2 cm
  • Number of Cells: 30
  • Profiling range: .1 m to 6
  • Operating environment: stream, river, irrigation canal

Fixed Mount Configurations

ChannelMaster ADCP

The ChannelMaster is a horizontally-oriented ADCP capable of measuring velocity, stage and discharge data. The product comes equipped with temperature, pressure and pitch/roll sensors and a vertical beam. Teledyne RDI Broad Band technology increases measuring accuracy by allowing for smaller cells and shorter sampling intervals. The ChannelMaster offers a range of user-selectable cell sizes from 25 cm to 8 m. The sampling system can collect highly accurate velocity data even in challenging environments such as slow flow or rapidly changing flow. Each product order includes a stainless-steel mounting fixture.

  • Frequency: 1200/600/300 kHz
  • Data Output Rate (typical): user select
  • Profile Resolution (mini cell size): 25/50/100 cm
  • Number of Cells: 128
  • Minimum profiling range: .75/1.5/3.0 m
  • Maximum profiling range: 20/90/300 m
  • Internal recording capacity: 4 MB
  • Operating environment: stream, river, lake, reservoir, estuary, irrigation canal

Workhorse Monitor ADCP

The Workhorse Monitor ADCP is Teledyne’s most popular direct-reading unit. The Workhorse can be fixed mounted (bottom) or boat mounted. Typically, the unit is bottom-frame mounted and hard-wired to shore to provide real-time monitoring of coastal currents. The Workhorse is designed with Teledyne RDI’s 4-beam solution, improving data accuracy, reliability and quality. This data integrity makes it a favorite for deployments in high-volume traffic areas like ports and harbors, often integrating into a Vessel Traffic Monitoring System.

The easy upgrade capacity of the Workhorse makes it a versatile option for a variety of applications.  Common upgrades include pressure sensor, external battery pack, bottom tracking and directional wave measurement.

  • Frequency: 1200/600/300 kHz
  • Data Output Rate (typical): user select
  • Profile Resolution (mini cell size): 25/50/100 cm
  • Number of Cells: 128/255
  • Minimum profiling range: 1.2/1.8/2.2
  • Maximum profiling range: 25/80/120 m
  • Internal recording capacity: optional
  • Operating environment: stream, river, lake, reservoir, estuary

Horizontal ADCP

The Horizontal ADCP includes an acoustic monitoring system and is generally mounted horizontally, measuring near-surface and water currents as well as optional multi-directional waves. The device can measure currents up to 220 meters horizontal range and at 128 individual points through Acoustic Doppler technology. The extended range is made possible by a 300-kHz. frequency and a narrow, less than 1 degree, beam. This capacity can provide a detailed illustration of the complete flow structure centered at a single depth. Data is reported in real-time, enabling rapid decision-making.

  • Frequency: 600/300 kHz
  • Data Output Rate (typical): user select
  • Profile Resolution (mini cell size): 50/100 cm
  • Number of Cells: 128
  • Minimum profiling range: 1.5/3.0
  • Maximum profiling range: 85/250 m
  • Internal recording capacity: optional
  • Operating environment: stream, river, lake, reservoir, estuary, irrigation canal

Vertical ADCP

The Vertical ADCP is designed for high-accuracy velocity profiling in open channels. It can serve as a stand-alone configuration for long-term monitoring, with stored or real-time data, or as a portable flow meter for spot checks. Teledyne RDI’s Broadband technology, also featured in the ChannelMaster ADCP, allows for smaller cells and shorter measuring intervals for improved data accuracy. The ADCP includes a range of 3 to 150 user-selectable velocity-measurement cells with cell sizes ranging from 3 cm to 20 cm. A small transducer, which mounts to the bottom of open channels, minimizes flow disturbance. An acoustic water-level sensor is also provided. No calibration is required, making this ADCP a more cost-effective solution.

  • Frequency: 2400 kHz
  • Data Output Rate (typical): 1 Hz
  • Profile Resolution (mini cell size): 3 cm
  • Number of Cells: 150
  • Minimum profiling range: 0.2 m
  • Maximum profiling range: 5 m
  • Internal recording capacity: 4 MB
  • Operating environment: stream, river, irrigation canal, storm channel
